Two members of the House of Representatives — Anthony Adepoju, representing Ibarapa Central/North federal constituency, and Ojo Makanjuola, representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere federal constituency — have announced their resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development comes amid growing speculation over the
defection of Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, from the PDP to the Allied Peoples
Movement (APM) following a meeting the governor reportedly had with the party’s
leaders at his residence in Ibadan on Wednesday.
In their separate resignation letters both dated May 5, the
lawmakers cited lingering legal battles and unresolved internal conflicts as
reasons for their leaving the PDP.
They, however, did not specify their next political
destination despite reports indicating they will follow the governor to the
APM.
Adepoju, in his resignation letter addressed to the PDP
chairman in his ward in Igbo-Ora, Ibarapa central, said protracted internal
disputes have ravaged the party, not only in his constituency but across the
state in recent months.
“To me, the PDP is not just a political party, it is an
association in which my father, the late Asiwaju of Igbo-Ora, Dr. Amos Ademola
Adepoju, was a founding father in 1998 and also served as its National
Financial Secretary between 1999 and 2002,” the statement reads.
“Therefore, the crisis rocking the party has not only
negatively affected my assignment as a federal lawmaker but has also created a
deep crack in the leadership of the party, thereby hindering my ability to
effectively serve the people of my constituency.”
The lawmaker said the resignation is aimed at allowing him
focus on the mandate given to him by the people of the constituency and serve
them in his best capacity.
“I regret how this resignation may be received by my
millions of followers at home and abroad and I assure everyone that my next
political move will be made known in due course,” he added.
In a similar vein, Makanjuola, in his resignation letter
addressed to the PDP chairman of Mayin ward 10 in Surulere LGA, said his
decision followed careful consultations and consideration of the legal crises
affecting the party.
“I hereby wish to tender my membership resignation from
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately,” the letter reads.
“The said resignation is my personal decision after careful
consultation and careful consideration of the legal battles bedevilling the
party.
“Our time with the party has been both brainstorming,
enlightening and rewarding. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute
to the Party’s ideals, principles, guidelines and activities.
“We are equally grateful for the support and cooperation
extended to us by the leadership and other members.
“We remain respectful of the party’s vision and wish the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continued success in its future endeavours.
“Kindly accept my resignation and take the necessary steps
to update your records accordingly.”
