Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, have rescued 92 civilians abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya Road in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The successful operation, conducted on Saturday, also resulted in the recovery of eight vehicles and the detonation of three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the fleeing insurgents, the military said in a statement on Sunday.
According to Lt Col Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation Hadin Kai, troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion at Dutse Kura detected the terrorists at about 11:22 a.m. while they were forcing civilians and vehicles off the road into nearby bush paths.
A Quick Reaction Force was immediately deployed, supported by reinforcement troops from the 27 Task Force Brigade Garrison. The troops pursued the insurgents towards the Mangari-Dora area, engaged them, and forced them to abandon the captives and vehicles before fleeing.
“All 92 kidnapped victims, comprising 52 males, 33 females and seven children, along with eight vehicles, were successfully recovered,” the statement said.
The insurgents attempted to slow down the troops by planting three IEDs along the Bula Zarma-Mangari axis. However, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team successfully detected and detonated all three devices, allowing the troops to continue their pursuit for about five kilometres beyond the Mangari area.
No personnel or equipment casualties were recorded during the operation. The rescued civilians were provided immediate welfare support and escorted to Damaturu in Yobe State to continue their journey.
The military described the operation as a demonstration of the “operational reach, surveillance capability and combat readiness” of Operation Hadin Kai, and warned that any further attempts by insurgents to kidnap or attack civilians in the North-East would be met with swift and overwhelming force.
