President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seriously considering Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara State, as Director-General of his 2027 presidential re-election campaign, according to insiders familiar with the discussions.
Though the decision is not yet final, sources say Tinubu has shown strong interest in Yari for the role. The president reportedly indicated this in recent weeks, a development believed to have triggered recent attacks on the Zamfara senator.
A source close to the presidency told THISDAY that Tinubu sees Yari as capable of leading the campaign effectively. Yari has shown consistent loyalty, especially after his Senate President bid, and as a former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, he is well-positioned to mobilise support across the North-West.
“The president is very comfortable with Senator Yari now, he will not only have his back but will also do a good job,” the source said. Yari is regarded as one of Tinubu’s closest and most genuine allies in the North and the Senate.
Appointing Yari is also viewed as a strategic move to strengthen support in the North and provide better regional balance for the 2027 campaign.
Yari has remained a steadfast supporter of the Tinubu administration since 2023.Critics spreading negative reports about Yari are unlikely to sway the president’s final decision.
