Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has appointed Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, mother of the late businessman Martin Onyekesi (popularly known as ‘Fish Magnet’), as the new Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development.
The appointment was announced on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as part of a list of 18 commissioner nominees forwarded to the Anambra State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation. Only four members of the previous cabinet made the new list.
Late Martin Onyekesi, CEO of Fish Magnate Group, was abducted by kidnappers from his home in Awka last year. His body was later dumped in another part of the town before any ransom could be paid.
The tragic incident sparked widespread outrage and protests, including one led by social media activist Very Dark Man.
Despite attempts by some individuals to politicise her son’s murder, Mrs. Onyekesi, who served as the Women Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, maintained that the killing had no political undertones.
The full list of nominees and their assigned portfolios includes several new faces and a few retained commissioners across key ministries such as Agriculture, Education, Health, Finance, Works, and others.
The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze, received the list during plenary on Tuesday for necessary legislative screening.
