A soldier attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Aulari under 202 Battalion has died after an accidental grenade explosion in Yobe State.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 6:24 a.m. on Monday, May 26, military sources confirmed.According to preliminary reports, the soldier was handling an FN rifle fitted with a 96 Energa grenade when the explosive detonated unexpectedly.
The blast caused fatal injuries to his face and left wrist.Sources noted that the rifle was not fired at the time of the incident, and the safety catch remained engaged.
The upper part of the grenade exploded while the rear section stayed attached to the muzzle of the rifle.
The deceased soldier’s remains were promptly evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for necessary procedures.
The Nigerian Army is expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the accidental discharge to prevent future occurrences.
