As primary elections wind down across Nigeria’s major political parties, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has emerged as one of the biggest losers in the political landscape.
Not only did the governor abandon his bid for a second term, but all his key loyalists who attempted to contest various positions under the All Progressives Congress (APC) were disqualified, paving the way for supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to dominate the process.
Fubara had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in search of political shelter amid his long-running feud with Wike, but the move failed to secure his future.
He eventually withdrew from the governorship race after realising he had no viable path to victory.
Reacting to the development, Wike disclosed that an agreement had been reached under which Fubara was not expected to pursue a second term.
According to Wike, the understanding was that impeachment threats against the governor would be dropped in exchange for Fubara dropping any ambition for re-election.
While several APC governors across the country secured automatic tickets for a second term, including Uba Sani (Kaduna), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Dikko Radda (Katsina), and others Fubara was denied the same privilege despite his public show of support for President Bola Tinubu.
Political activist Idam criticised the development, describing Fubara as a scapegoat while other governors were rewarded.
He warned that the governor risks fading into political obscurity, noting the lack of standout, people-oriented projects during his administration that could have built lasting goodwill.
Idam also expressed concern about Fubara’s potential vulnerability to anti-graft agencies after leaving office.
However, former Arewa Consultative Forum Secretary General Anthony Sani offered a more optimistic view, stating that it is possible for Fubara to bounce back politically, citing historical precedents where fortunes change in politics.
