The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly denied allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, influenced its ongoing screening exercise for aspirants.
The party insisted that Wike is not a member of the APC and therefore has no role or hand in its internal processes, including the screening of candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement responding to reports of bias in the screening of State Assembly aspirants, Rivers APC spokesman, Chief Tony Ikenga, described the claims as “misleading and unfair.”
“Wike is not a member of our party, and so has no hand in our screening process. The allegation of being biased in the screening process is misleading and unfair,” Ikenga said.
The clarification comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, as various factions position themselves for the 2027 governorship and legislative elections.
Recent reports suggested that aspirants aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara were disqualified during the screening, while those perceived to be loyal to Wike were cleared, sparking accusations of external interference.
The APC maintained that the screening exercise was conducted transparently and in line with the party’s guidelines, without any external influence from non-members.
Wike had earlier distanced himself from the controversy, stating that as a non-member of the APC, he had no knowledge or involvement in the party’s screening outcomes.
