Rivers: Fubara Made History as First APC Governor Denied Re-election – Jega

A public affairs analyst, Mahmud Jega, has stated that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has made history by becoming the first All Progressives Congress (APC) governor to be denied a re-election bid.

Jega made the remark on Friday night during a live interview on Arise Television while discussing Fubara’s last-minute withdrawal from the APC gubernatorial primary election.

According to Jega, the development was not surprising to those who had followed events in Rivers State over the past three years.

“Fubara has made history as the first APC governor denied a re-election bid, including the ones who defected from other parties,” he said.

Jega linked the outcome to the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He suggested that a key term of the settlement was that Wike’s allies in the State Assembly would not impeach Fubara, while the governor, in turn, would not contest for a second term in 2027.

The governor’s withdrawal from the primary on the eve of the exercise has drawn mixed reactions, with some Nigerians commending him for prioritising peace while others criticised him for appearing weak.
