The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has thrown its weight behind the National Executive Council’s stance, calling on the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Government to reverse the decision exempting candidates seeking admission into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes from sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
The union described the policy as counterproductive and detrimental to the future of teacher education in the country. In a joint statement, Kaduna NUT Chairman Ibrahim Dalhatu and Secretary Adamu Ayuba Kaltungo argued that removing the JAMB requirement for Colleges of Education would lower the quality of teacher training and ultimately harm the standard of education nationwide.
The union stressed that teaching is a highly intellectual and strategic profession that demands rigorous and competitive entry processes. According to the statement:
“Excluding candidates from taking the examination will imply that the profession is for academically weak candidates and ‘all comers’.”
The NUT warned that the move would further damage the already low public perception of the teaching profession, reinforcing the notion that it is a “last resort” career rather than one reserved for passionate and capable individuals.
It also noted that the policy goes against global best practices, where top-performing education systems select teachers from among the brightest students.
The union urged the government to focus instead on improving teachers’ welfare, remuneration, and working conditions to attract high-calibre candidates. It also recommended introducing scholarships, bursaries, and special incentives for education students, while maintaining high admission standards.
