President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International FC on clinching the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title for a record ninth time.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the managers, players, and fans of the Enugu-based club for finishing the season at the top of the table with 68 points from 38 matches, ahead of their closest rivals, Rivers United.
President Tinubu recalled Rangers’ glorious era in the 1970s and 1980s, when the club dominated Nigerian football, winning multiple league and FA Cup titles.
He particularly highlighted their historic run in 1975, when they reached the finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs, and their triumph in the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup.
The President also congratulated Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, attributing the club’s success to his administration’s investments in youth and sports development.
“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement,” President Tinubu said.
He further commended Rivers United for their impressive performance and sportsmanship throughout the season.
President Tinubu wished both Rangers International FC and Rivers United success as they represent Nigeria in the upcoming CAF Champions League.
