Presidency reacts to alleged move by Tinubu to rename Nigeria, abolish Sharia law

The Presidency has dismissed as fake news a viral report claiming that President Bola Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to change Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 21, 2026, by President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the report as baseless and misleading.

The statement clarified that there is no such proposal or bill before the National Assembly or any ongoing move by the Tinubu administration to alter the country’s name or tamper with Sharia Law.

“The report is fake news deliberately planted by desperate politicians to cause unnecessary tension and disaffection in the country ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Onanuga said.

The Presidency noted that any constitutional amendment in Nigeria requires rigorous processes, including approval by a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.

No such process regarding name change or Sharia has been initiated by the Federal Government.

The statement further stressed that President Tinubu remains focused on delivering economic reforms, improving security, and addressing the daily challenges facing Nigerians, rather than engaging in divisive or unnecessary constitutional upheavals.

The fake report, which has been circulating on social media, allegedly referenced a supposed “Project True Federation” aimed at devolving more powers and scrapping Sharia criminal law. The Presidency described it as a recycled hoax from late 2025.
