The Presidency has sharply criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing his remarks on President Bola Tinubu’s foreign engagements as “populism over the facts.”
The rebuke follows Obi’s comments questioning the value of Nigeria’s delegation to the African CEO Forum in Rwanda and broader criticisms of Tinubu’s international trips, which he argued should be measured by tangible economic outcomes rather than ceremonial displays.
In a statement on Saturday, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, defended the composition of Nigeria’s delegation to the Kigali event, noting that it included leading industrialists such as Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Tony Elumelu, Wale Tinubu, and Jim Ovia.
“The Nigerian entourage to the African CEO Forum in Rwanda was made up of some of Nigeria’s industrial leaders,” the statement emphasised.
The Presidency argued that President Tinubu’s diplomatic engagements are strategic, aimed at attracting investments, strengthening trade relations, and building long-term economic confidence, rather than seeking “flashy headlines or staged signing ceremonies.”
It highlighted investment commitments secured in sectors including energy, technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and solid minerals, alongside key domestic reforms such as fuel subsidy removal, forex market unification, and initiatives on food security and CNG adoption.
The statement further dismissed comparisons with the United States’ diplomatic approach, noting differences in global influence and economic structure, and stressed that presidential travels are tied to constitutional, diplomatic, and security responsibilities.
The Presidency concluded by urging Obi to focus on facts rather than optics, while taking a swipe at his political journey across different parties in recent years.
