The Labour Party has openly acknowledged that the departure of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has left a significant vacuum within the party.
Ken Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, made the admission on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.
“We can’t close our eyes to the fact that we lost Peter Obi, and he was a colossus within the party. His departure left a void,” Asogwa said.
He noted that the party had anticipated Obi’s exit, which became official on December 31, and had already put measures in place to reduce its impact.
“Before his departure, the rumour was already out there that he was leaving. The new leadership had already taken a number of steps to cushion the effects of that departure,” he explained.
Asogwa said the party returned to the drawing board to rebuild its structure, identifying the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) as its strongest institutional support base.
“We discovered that the greatest potential that the Labour Party has is the institutional members it has in the name of NLC and TUC. We went back to marry them and successfully got them back,” he added.
Despite the loss, the spokesperson expressed confidence that the party still has the capacity to produce a strong presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
“The Labour Party that produced the former presidential candidate has capacity, even better capacity today, to produce someone of commensurate stature,” Asogwa stated.
Obi’s move followed his alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition.
The development came after months of tension, including a 48-hour ultimatum issued to him by a faction of the party to formally resign.
