The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has strongly condemned the Friday bandit attack on communities in Oriire Local Government Area, describing it as another sad example of the state government’s failure to secure lives and property.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party sympathised with the families of the two people killed in the attack and demanded the immediate rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and the headteacher, Mrs Folawe Alamu.
According to reports, gunmen on motorcycles simultaneously attacked Yawota and Ahoro Esinele communities around 9 am on Friday, killing two residents and abducting several pupils along with the headteacher.
The APC said the incident further exposed the ineptitude of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration in tackling insecurity.
The party noted that several local government areas, particularly Oriire, Ibarapa North, Oluyole, Itesiwaju, and Ido, have repeatedly suffered violent attacks by gunmen and bandits.
“The saddening part of the whole thing is that Governor Makinde, who is the Chief Security Officer of the state, was busy gallivanting on the streets of Ibadan, the state capital at the time of the Friday attacks in the name of Street Credibility for the purpose of selfish politicking,” the statement read.
The party questioned the whereabouts and effectiveness of security assets procured by the state, including surveillance aircraft allegedly bought with billions of naira, and asked why monthly security votes have not yielded visible results.
It urged Governor Makinde to take urgent and serious steps to protect residents, work with relevant stakeholders, and deploy security operatives effectively across the state instead of using them for political activities.
The APC warned that the governor must prioritise governance and the security of citizens as his time in office winds down.
