For the second time in less than two months, a suspected gas leak has struck schools in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, hospitalising over 100 students and several teachers.
The incident affected multiple schools, including Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende, and Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School, Epe Garage, Ijebu Ode.
Affected students and teachers were rushed to the Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu Ode, and nearby private hospitals for treatment. Many complained of stomach aches, weakness, dizziness, and respiratory discomfort.
A video circulating on social media captured students running out of the school premises in panic, while teachers assisted fainting victims into vehicles for urgent medical attention.
An eyewitness at the Ogun State Hospital described the situation as more severe than the previous leak in April.
“The whole hospital is full, and some parents have taken their children to private facilities,” the eyewitness said.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incident and stated that relevant agencies had been deployed to the affected areas.
Air quality monitoring devices in the area recorded elevated methane (CH₄) levels, with peak readings of approximately 13,500 ppm. While below the lower explosive limit, the levels were deemed environmentally significant.
The state government has activated a multi-agency team to investigate the source of the emissions, assess risks, and check for other gases such as hydrogen sulphide and volatile organic compounds.
Residents were advised to remain calm, avoid open flames where unusual gas odours are noticed, and report symptoms like headaches, nausea, or breathing difficulties to health facilities immediately.
This latest incident follows a similar gas leak in April at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, which hospitalised no fewer than 30 students and one teacher.
The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to public health and environmental safety, promising further updates as investigations continue.
