Former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has welcomed the Federal High Court judgment that nullified key sections of INEC’s timetable for the 2027 general elections.
Justice M.G. Umar ruled that INEC exceeded its powers by setting certain deadlines that conflicted with the Electoral Act 2026.Olawepo-Hashim described the ruling as “a courageous and principled decision” that reinforces the supremacy of the law.
“This judgment restores confidence in our democratic institutions and prevents administrative overreach,” he said.
The court struck down portions of the timetable relating to party primaries, candidate nominations, and other key electoral activities.
The decision has been applauded by several opposition figures who viewed INEC’s original timetable as too restrictive.
