The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed deep concern over the prolonged captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in coordinated attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union described the situation as heartbreaking and called for urgent and decisive action from the government and security agencies to secure the immediate release of the victims.
The union noted that the continued detention of the abducted teachers and students is inflicting severe psychological distress on their families, the school community, and the entire teaching profession.
This distress has been heightened by a video released by the kidnappers showing the victims in traumatic conditions pleading for their freedom.
“The union views this development as both heartbreaking, barbaric and unacceptable. No child or teacher deserves to endure such terror,” the statement read.
The NUT emphasised that every additional minute the victims spend in captivity deepens their trauma and raises serious concerns about their welfare.
It acknowledged ongoing interventions by the government and security operatives but stressed that “time is of the essence.”
The union urged authorities to intensify surveillance, strengthen community intelligence gathering, and deploy all necessary operational and diplomatic measures to rescue the victims safely.
It also called on community leaders and residents to provide credible information that could aid the rescue efforts.
The NUT reiterated its commitment to ensuring schools remain safe havens rather than battlegrounds, demanding swift, responsive action and unwavering resolve from all relevant authorities.
