Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has expressed strong doubts that the North will back a joint presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in a recent interview, Datti said: “It is very unlikely that the North will rally around OK. That is my personal opinion.”
While maintaining respect for the key political actors, Datti noted that regional influence, political experience, and demographic strength would play decisive roles.
He specifically highlighted Kwankwaso’s overwhelming control in Kano State and his strong northern base, questioning the balance in such a pairing.
Datti recalled advising Peter Obi in January 2024 to engage major northern figures like Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai early for effective strategy ahead of 2027.
He also raised concerns about inconsistencies in political alliances and the challenges of merging different regional strengths.
