Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has declared that no candidate can emerge victorious in Nigeria’s presidential election without securing strong support from the Northern region.
Dalung, who is currently serving as the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) State Election Committee in Nasarawa State, made the remark on Friday while supervising the party’s primary elections for the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate seats in Lafia.
“You cannot win an election in Nigeria without the North. You cannot,” Dalung stated emphatically.
“And the North is predominantly ADC.”He observed that Nigeria’s political landscape has reverted to the regional politics of the First Republic, where parties drew their strongest support from specific regions.
“We have gone back to regional politics now in Nigeria,” he said. “What happened in the First Republic is what is happening now.
"The Igbos have taken APGA. APC has been abandoned by Nigerians and left to Tinubu and his people. The PDP, Jonathan has taken it to the South.”
Dalung described the ADC as the only truly national party with widespread reach across the country, boasting dominance in the North while maintaining notable influence in the South West and other regions.
On the conduct of the ongoing primaries in Nasarawa State, he disclosed that no consensus had been reached for any position yet.
He also addressed the wave of litigations facing the party, describing them as an indication of the ADC’s rising relevance and attractiveness in the political space.
The comments come as the ADC holds its primary elections across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
