The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Branch, has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged assault of doctors by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a hospital in the state.
The strike, which is expected to commence immediately, will affect all public and private hospitals across Akwa Ibom State.
The NMA accused the EFCC operatives of storming a medical facility, harassing and physically assaulting doctors on duty in connection with a case being investigated by the anti-graft agency.
Reacting to the development, the EFCC has strongly denied the allegations of assault. The commission stated that its operatives visited the hospital solely to authenticate a medical report presented by a suspect who is standing trial.
The EFCC described the NMA’s claim as misleading, insisting that no doctor was assaulted during the operation.
The development has heightened tension between the medical community and the anti-corruption agency in the state, with patients likely to bear the brunt of the industrial action as medical services are withdrawn.
Efforts are ongoing to resolve the impasse.
