Nigerian, US Forces Eliminate Over 20 ISWAP Fighters in Coordinated North-East Air Strikes

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that Nigerian troops, working in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), killed more than 20 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in a fresh coordinated air operation in the North-East.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, on Monday, the strikes targeted the general area of Metele.

They were launched based on intelligence reports indicating the movement and regrouping of terrorist elements in the region.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and deny insurgents safe havens across Nigeria. The coordinated air strikes specifically hit ISIS/ISWAP fighters observed converging in the area.

The DHQ described the mission as a major success in the counter-insurgency campaign, resulting in the elimination of more than 20 terrorists.

It emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in partnership with US Africa Command, will sustain operations to degrade terrorist capabilities in the North-East.

These actions aim to disrupt terrorist movements, remove fighters from the battlefield, and prevent regrouping.

Maj.-Gen. Uba reiterated that there will be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in the country, underscoring the military’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The latest strikes come amid deepened counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, building on recent joint operations that have neutralized senior ISIS-linked figures in the region.

This partnership reflects continued efforts to address the long-standing insurgency that has plagued parts of northeastern Nigeria for over a decade.
