Nigeria and Morocco have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the major Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project, while expanding cooperation in energy, agriculture, and trade.
This was disclosed after a high-level telephone conversation between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
Both ministers described the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline as a transformative project that will enhance regional energy security and promote economic integration across West Africa’s Atlantic coast.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, technical studies by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) have been successfully completed.An intergovernmental agreement is expected to be signed by President Bola Tinubu and King Mohammed VI in the last quarter of 2026.
In addition to the gas pipeline, the two countries agreed to strengthen collaboration on fertiliser production and distribution to boost food security across Africa.
The ministers also discussed reviving broader bilateral ties. Nigeria is set to host the second session of the Nigeria-Morocco Bilateral Joint Commission to reactivate agreements signed in 2018.
They further resolved to re-establish the Nigeria-Morocco Business Council.The two sides highlighted the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and a proposed bilateral double taxation treaty.
Bianca Ojukwu accepted an invitation to undertake an official visit to Morocco at a mutually convenient time to deepen the partnership.
