NDC: Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Acted Wisely – Reuben Abati

Veteran journalist and former presidential spokesman Reuben Abati has praised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso for their recent decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a wise and cautious move.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Monday, Abati noted that the pair acted out of prudence amid growing uncertainties in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party they had previously aligned with.

He pointed to legal hurdles, including the referral of the ADC’s key issues to the Federal High Court, which has cast doubt on the party’s stability and future.

“Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso acted wisely out of fear because it is very clear that the ADC that they joined is not going to work; you could run into troubled matters,” Abati said.

“The substantive matter having been referred to the Federal High Court, so they don’t know how that will turn out. So they’ve quickly ported to another existing platform.”

Abati, however, raised questions about the next steps for the two prominent politicians, particularly the possibility of a joint “OK ticket” and the shape of any broader alliance as Nigeria approaches future elections.

Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC on Sunday, receiving their membership cards at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

They were welcomed by NDC national leader Seriake Dickson and other top party officials in the presence of hundreds of enthusiastic supporters.
