The National Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges through legislative action and strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
A major step in this direction is the advancement of the National Food Reserve Agency (Establishment) Bill, 2026 (SB 139), which scaled second reading and had its committee report presented at plenary.
Sponsored by Senator Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central), the bill seeks to establish a dedicated agency responsible for the storage, management, and distribution of strategic food reserves.
This is aimed at mitigating the impact of food shortages, price volatility, emergencies, and climate-related disruptions.
Lawmakers emphasised that the proposed agency would move Nigeria away from reactive, ad-hoc interventions toward a more structured and proactive food reserve system capable of stabilising prices and ensuring availability during crises.
The National Assembly is collaborating with agricultural experts, government ministries, development partners, and private sector players to build a resilient food system.
This includes boosting funding for farmers, improving storage infrastructure, and enhancing coordination between federal and state governments.
The move is part of broader efforts by the 10th National Assembly to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in tackling food insecurity and achieving sustainable agricultural development.
