A man identified as Sani Abdullahi was shot dead at the venue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the House of Representatives in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Saturday amid tensions over the delayed commencement of the primary election.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the trouble started when some APC members, particularly youths, protested the absence of returning officers who were supposed to conduct the exercise scheduled for Saturday morning.
According to Ibrahim Sale, a resident who witnessed the event, the youths blocked the road to prevent government officials from leaving the venue, insisting the electoral officers must arrive before anyone departs.
This escalated when security personnel, including soldiers, moved in to disperse the protesters.
“The youths started throwing stones at the security personnel, and the soldiers responded by shooting. A stray bullet hit the victim,” Sale said.
Sani Abdullahi, a resident of Kasuwan Ali Community in Mangu, was killed in the chaos.
The incident caused confusion at the scene, with residents condemning the killing and calling on authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
The primary election was eventually disrupted by the violent turn of events.
