Hoodlums on Sunday invaded the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Akure, disrupting the announcement of results for the House of Representatives primary elections held the previous day.
The primaries took place across 203 wards in the state’s nine federal constituencies, in line with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable.
Prior to the invasion, the primary election committee had announced winners in three federal constituencies:
Akure North/South: Omowunmi Olatunji won with 9,234 votes.
Okitipupa/Irele: Olumuyiwa Daramola emerged victorious with 6,547 votes, defeating incumbent lawmaker Jimi Odimayo (827 votes) and Dele Omosehin (623 votes).
Ondo East/West: Abiola Makinde secured the ticket with 10,847 votes.
According to eyewitnesses, chaos erupted when thugs stormed the secretariat as the committee, led by Iboroma Harry Dabibi, attempted to announce more results.
Party members, journalists, and officials fled the scene for safety despite the presence of security operatives.
The committee temporarily suspended the exercise due to security concerns. After normalcy was restored, the committee reconvened and announced additional results:
Akoko North East/North West: Ifeoluwa Ehindero won with 22,304 votes, defeating Ibrahim Moruf Tosin (330 votes) and Oseni Oyeniyi (118 votes).
Akoko South East/South West: Adefarati Gboyega emerged winner with 1,865 valid votes after Olusegun Victor Ategbole’s 12,011 votes were voided due to disqualification.
Owo/Ose: Kayode Ijalana won with 7,098 valid votes after Ayodeji Arowele Samuel’s 9,690 votes were invalidated.
Idanre/Ifedore: Rasaq Obe secured the ticket with 4,988 valid votes after Adefisoye Tajudeen Adeyemi’s 5,463 votes were declared invalid.
Odigbo/Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo: Matthew Oyerimade won with 12,744 votes.
Ilaje/Ese-Odo: Akingboye Akinleke David defeated incumbent Donald Ojogo, polling 9,284 votes.
The committee invalidated votes of some aspirants who failed to obtain clearance from the party’s screening committee.
In his remarks, Dabibi commended APC leaders, stakeholders, and members for the relative peace maintained during the primaries, describing the process as a reflection of the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
The disruption highlights ongoing challenges with political violence and thuggery during party primaries in parts of Nigeria.
