In a major political development, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has led his faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to formalise an alliance with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as political realignments intensify towards the 2027 general elections.
The alliance agreement will enable Governor Makinde’s preferred candidates for the governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats to contest the 2027 elections on the APM platform rather than under the PDP banner.
The signing of the MoU was supervised by Governor Makinde and the National Chairman of the APM, and it formed a key part of the “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026” held at Mapo Hall.
The high-profile event also served as the platform for Makinde to formally declare his presidential ambition for 2027.
Sources close to the governor described the move as a strategic coalition aimed at consolidating political strength, building on Makinde’s performance and legacy in Oyo State, rather than a outright defection of the entire PDP structure.
Several of the governor’s loyalists, elected officials, appointees, and key allies have already moved to the APM in recent weeks.
The development is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape in Oyo State and influence calculations in the South-West region.
It comes amid ongoing crises and factionalisation within the PDP at both state and national levels.
Further details on the full terms of the MoU, candidate selection processes, and the structure of the alliance are anticipated in the coming days as both parties work to harmonise their structures for the upcoming polls.
