Lagos to Launch State-Owned Driver’s Licence in Collaboration with FG

The Lagos State Government has finalised plans to introduce its own state-issued driver’s licence, aimed at improving road safety, sanity, and efficiency in the issuance process across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 annual ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.

According to Osiyemi, the new Lagos State driver’s licence will be launched in the coming weeks in collaboration with the Federal Government.

He noted that it will be optional for motorists, who can choose between the federal licence or the state version.

The state initiative is expected to address delays currently experienced with the federal issuance process while enhancing overall road safety and regulatory efficiency.

Osiyemi added that the move forms part of broader efforts by the state to ensure better compliance and sanity on Lagos roads.

The announcement coincided with updates on major infrastructure projects, including the Federal Executive Council’s approval of funding for Phase One of the Lagos Green Line rail project, scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

A Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for its execution.

The 68-kilometre Green Line will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations, and is designed to transport up to 35,000 passengers per hour.
