Kidnapped Passengers Escape After Bandits Doze Off in Kogi Forest

Several passengers abducted along the Itobe-Ajegwu-Anyigba road in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State have escaped after their captors fell asleep in the forest.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 23, 2026, when armed bandits attacked two passenger buses.

One of the buses bears the registration number Ebonyi NKE 737 XA. A motorcycle rider was also forcibly taken along with the travellers.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bandits, numbering about 10 and armed with AK-47 and Pump Action rifles, barricaded the road, stopped the buses, and robbed the passengers of their money, phones, and other valuables before marching them into the bush.

Three of the kidnapped victims, Micheal Adejo, Monday, and Mariam Yakubu (also referred to as Adaji in some accounts) managed to escape.

They narrated that the hoodlums ordered them to lie face down during the operation. Later, when the bandits retired and dozed off in the forest, the victims crawled away from their position, got up, and fled to a nearby village.

A resident, Ahiaba Michael, said security operatives, including vigilantes and hunters, immediately trailed the kidnappers but could not recover the remaining victims.

However, one suspect identified as Monday Agi was arrested barely three hours after the attack.

A security source said the suspect claimed he was travelling from Ekiti on a trailer, alighted near the scene, and ran into the bush with two herders after hearing gunshots. He is currently in police custody as manhunt for the other bandits continues.

The Kogi State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, did not respond to calls and text messages for comments as at the time of filing this report.
