Katsina: Communities I Allowed Negotiate with Bandits Are Enjoying Peace – Gov Radda

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has revealed that he permitted some communities in the state to negotiate directly with bandits as a way to restore peace in their areas.

In an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Governor Radda explained that residents in heavily affected communities approached him, pleading for permission to engage the bandits after suffering prolonged attacks and feeling inadequately protected by security forces.

According to the governor, the communities informed him that the bandits were willing to lay down their arms in exchange for peace. While Radda made it clear he would not personally participate in or officially endorse such negotiations, he allowed the communities to proceed based on their own wishes.

“Some communities have negotiated with these bandits and for over one year, there has been no attack in those places,” Radda stated. He added that any occasional incidents in the state usually involve bandits coming from other locations, not the ones that reached agreements locally.

The governor emphasized that he would never order bandits to surrender arms himself, stressing that the initiative came from the communities and aligned with their desire for normalcy. Many of these communities, he said, are now able to move freely and return to their farms.

Radda noted that as a democratically elected leader, he chose to respect the mandate and preferences of the people he serves.

This approach comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Katsina State, where banditry has disrupted lives for years. While some communities report relative calm, concerns remain about the sustainability of such local arrangements and their broader implications for security across the state.
