In a dramatic development that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the 'Obidient' Movement has been officially disbanded, with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his key ally Yunusa Tanko expelled from the group.
The decision, announced on Thursday, comes as political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections. Those behind the move cited “political prostitution” and the alleged hijacking of the movement for personal gains and private advantage as the primary reasons for the drastic action.The organisation has now been rebranded as the 'OBEDIENT' Movement to completely sever ties with Peter Obi and his loyalists.
International Coordinator of the rebranded 'OBEDIENT' Movement, Dr Barry Avotu Johnson, addressed journalists at a press briefing in Abuja, where he formally unveiled the new direction. Dr Johnson clarified that the movement has not adopted any presidential candidate for the 2027 elections and has completely ceased all dealings with the Labour Party.
He explained that the rebranding became necessary because, after the 2023 elections, the original vision and founding ideals of the movement were no longer being upheld by those who took control of its structure.“Several calls, SMS, and WhatsApp messages sent to Peter Obi and Yunusa Tanko seeking their reaction went unanswered as at the time of filing this report.”
The development is expected to further fracture the opposition political space and trigger fresh realignments as various groups and individuals begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.
