Insecurity Threatens Credible Elections, Says INEC Chair

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has warned that prevailing insecurity across Nigeria poses a serious threat to the conduct of credible general elections in 2027.

Amupitan made the remark on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, in Abuja, as preparations for the 2027 polls intensify.

He stressed that security challenges, including violence and threats to electoral officials and materials, could undermine public confidence and the integrity of the electoral process if not urgently addressed.

“The scale of insecurity across the various parts of Nigeria presents a threat to the conduct of fair elections,” Amupitan said.

He called for a comprehensive security risk analysis ahead of the elections to identify potential flashpoints and deploy appropriate mitigation strategies to protect voters, electoral officials, and the overall process.

The INEC chairman highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the commission and security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, which plays a lead role in electoral security.

He noted that upcoming activities such as party primaries and congresses, as well as off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, require proactive security planning.

Amupitan also drew attention to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the country, insisting that displaced citizens must not be disenfranchised and should be provided a conducive environment to exercise their franchise.

He equally urged special attention for persons with disabilities. In response, the Inspector-General of Police assured INEC of the Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, nationwide threat assessments, and strict enforcement of electoral laws.

He warned that perpetrators of vote-buying, voter intimidation, ballot snatching, and attacks on electoral materials would be arrested and prosecuted.
