Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has declared that he will not tolerate any form of criminality if elected President in 2027.
Obi made the strong assertion while describing the fuel subsidy regime as “organised crime” against the Nigerian people.
Speaking on Trust TV, the former Anambra State governor highlighted the glaring inconsistencies in Nigeria’s fuel consumption figures, comparing the country to Pakistan.
“Subsidy is organized crime and I won’t allow any form of criminality as the President of Nigeria,” Obi said.
“The amount of fuel they say we consume cannot be consumed by this country, there’s empirical evidence. We are about the same size as Pakistan, they have more roads and we probably have the same number of vehicles or they have even more, yet their fuel consumption is a third of ours.
So who is drinking the balance?”Obi’s comment reinforces his long-standing position against subsidy-related graft, a stance he and other candidates had advocated during the 2023 presidential election.
President Bola Tinubu eventually removed the fuel subsidy shortly after assuming office. The statement underscores Obi’s commitment to tackling systemic corruption and inefficiency as part of his vision for the 2027 presidential race.
