IGP Disu Seeks Stronger International Support for Nigeria Police Reforms

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for enhanced collaboration with international development partners to fast-track comprehensive reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.

Disu made the call on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, while hosting a high-level stakeholders’ dialogue at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The engagement brought together representatives from diplomatic missions, international organisations, and key institutional bodies committed to policing reforms.

The dialogue, organised in partnership with the Police Reform Secretariat (PRS), included participants from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Women, the British High Commission, and the Governments of Germany, Spain, and Slovakia, among others.

Also present were officials from the National Institute for Police Studies (NIPS) and various development organisations.

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to transformation, the IGP emphasised the vision of building a modern, professional, intelligence-led, and accountable police institution firmly rooted in the rule of law, respect for human rights, and strong community partnerships.

He noted that the ongoing reforms aim to reposition the Nigeria Police Force as a technology-driven and citizen-focused organisation better equipped to tackle contemporary security challenges.

In his presentation, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat, Professor Olu Ogunsakin, outlined the core pillars of the reform agenda.

These include legal and policy reforms, election security management, leadership development, strategic stakeholder engagement, oversight mechanisms, and initiatives to build community trust.

Professor Ogunsakin stressed the critical role of sustained international partnerships in achieving institutional capacity building and long-term success of the reform process.

The engagement is part of broader efforts by the current police leadership to deliver a more effective, rights-respecting, and professionally equipped police service for Nigerians.
