House of Reps Moves to Strengthen Policing with Police Trust Fund Bill

The House of Representatives has taken a significant step to bolster Nigeria’s security framework by adopting the report of its Committee on Police Affairs on the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2026.

This legislative move paves the way for a comprehensive overhaul of the existing 2019 Act governing the Police Trust Fund. The new bill seeks to establish a more robust and sustainable funding mechanism for the Nigeria Police Force, while introducing key reforms aimed at modernising police training, enhancing officers’ welfare, and strengthening overall operational effectiveness.

Lawmakers believe the proposed legislation will address long-standing challenges facing the police, including inadequate funding, outdated training infrastructure, and poor welfare packages that have hampered the force’s ability to maintain internal security effectively.

Once passed into law, the re-enacted Trust Fund is expected to provide a dedicated, reliable revenue stream to equip the police with modern tools, improve personnel motivation, and ultimately enhance public safety across the country.

The bill will now proceed to the next stage in the legislative process for further consideration and possible passage by the House.
