The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has selected former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
This decision followed an intensive three-week consultation and screening process involving key party stakeholders, elders, and all 11 governorship aspirants in the state.
The process included prominent figures such as former Governor Samuel Ortom, Senate Minority Leader Senator Patrick Abba Moro, the State Working Committee led by Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji, lawmakers, and influential blocs like the G-14 and G-9.
Party sources described the outcome as a unified and disciplined decision, with all 10 other aspirants accepting the result.
Notable aspirants, including Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, Rt. Hon. Dominic Ucha, Revd. Tor Uja, Prof. Sebastine Hon, SAN, Dr. Tersoo Loko, and Engr. Tor Tiv Ato, reportedly aligned with the consensus and pledged their full support.
Former Governor Ortom commended the aspirants for displaying “rare political maturity” and urged them to stay united to unseat the current administration in 2027.
Senator Abba Moro also hailed the development as a necessary step to bolster the PDP’s chances in the state.
In his acceptance remarks, Aondoakaa expressed gratitude for the trust reposed in him. He vowed to foster greater unity within the party, mobilize all stakeholders into a formidable force, and reposition the PDP for victory.
He emphasized his commitment to delivering the “mandate of the Benue people.”
The PDP leadership views the consensus arrangement as a strategic move to minimize internal divisions and enhance the party’s competitiveness in the upcoming polls.
