The Federal Government has inaugurated a Ministerial Technical Working Committee to develop the National Water Compact and strengthen water governance across Nigeria.
The inauguration was performed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, in Abuja.
A statement by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Funmi Imuetinyan, described the move as a major step towards integrated water resources management, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and alignment with global best practices.
Prof. Utsev said the National Water Compact will serve as a strategic framework providing a clear roadmap for sustainable development in the water sector.
He noted that it will outline coordinated actions to improve governance, institutional efficiency, and equitable access to water and sanitation services nationwide.
The minister stressed the importance of synergy among relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), development partners, state governments, and other stakeholders for the successful implementation of the Compact.
The Committee Chairman and Director of Water Supply and Support Services, Babarinde Segun Mukaila, highlighted that the Compact will strengthen water institutions, boost climate resilience, and identify key interventions for sectoral growth.
Stakeholders at the event expressed confidence that the initiative will significantly enhance Nigeria’s water governance and accelerate access to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services for all citizens.
