FG Declares Wednesday, Thursday as Public Holiday for Eid-el-Kabir

The Federal Government has announced that Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, will be observed as public holidays across Nigeria in commemoration of Eid-el-Kabir.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

The announcement was made to enable Muslim faithful to celebrate the festival, which marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage and commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.

In the statement, the government urged employers in both public and private sectors to grant eligible staff the necessary time off while ensuring minimal disruption to essential services.

Banks, government offices, and many businesses are expected to remain closed during the two-day period.Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.

It is typically marked by the slaughtering of rams, distribution of meat to the less privileged, prayers at Eid grounds, and family gatherings.
