A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Halima Haliru Umar to 20 years in prison for her role as an arms courier to bandit networks.
Justice Yilwewa Joseph handed down the sentence on Friday after the convict was found guilty on counts three and four, which bordered on terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Halima Umar was arrested in 2025 by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State with 302 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and ₦57,000 cash.
She pleaded guilty to the two counts upon arraignment. Justice Yilwewa convicted her after she admitted to the facts presented by the prosecution without offering any defence.
The defence counsel, Hamzat Dantani, had urged the court to show leniency, citing the convict’s decision not to waste the court’s time.
The court, however, adjourned proceedings to July 9, 2026, for the commencement of trial on the remaining two counts to which she had pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution described the conviction as a significant step in ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal arms supply lines and dismantle bandit and terrorist networks across the country.
