Federal High Court Opens Registries on Weekends for Pre-Election Cases

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has directed all its registries across the country to operate on weekends and public holidays to facilitate the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by the Chief Registrar, Yahaya Shafa, on Thursday, the court announced that registries will be open between 10:00am and 2:00pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays exclusively for the filing of pre-election cases.

The decision was taken due to the strict constitutional and statutory timelines for filing and determining pre-election disputes, which require swift action to meet legal deadlines.

The statement reads in part: “This has become expedient to meet up with the limited time frame for filing pre-election matters.”

With political parties intensifying preparations for the 2027 polls, including the ongoing conduct of primaries for governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions the extended registry hours are expected to ease pressure on legal practitioners and litigants.
