A former PDP governorship aspirant in Bayelsa State, Mr. Reuben Okoya, has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside several other prominent politicians and their supporters.
Okoya, who contested the 2023 governorship ticket under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), joined the NDC together with a former finance commissioner, Professor Silva Opuala-Charles, members of the Obidient Movement in Bayelsa State, businessman and politician Mr. Diepreye Leghemo, and women mobiliser Esther Saiyo, among others.
The defectors were formally received on Wednesday at the NDC state secretariat in Yenagoa by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas.
While welcoming the new members, Senator Cleopas urged them to fully embrace the ideology of the party’s leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, which centres on service to the people.
He described the NDC as the “biblical Noah’s Ark” for Nigerians seeking good governance and warned that the political journey ahead would require courage and conviction.“Don’t be afraid! Political power is not given but contended for... Senator Seriake Dickson does not invest in a fight that he won’t win.
He has invested all his political capital in the NDC and he cannot afford to fail,” Cleopas said.In his defection speech, Reuben Okoya said he resigned from the PDP after careful consideration and chose the NDC because it aligns with his values of service to the people.
Diepreye Leghemo, a former House of Representatives aspirant, also pledged to work with other members to make the NDC a formidable force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC, which was registered a few months ago, has rapidly gained prominence as a major opposition platform, attracting high-profile figures including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
