Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri has removed the paramount ruler of Ogboinbiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and dissolved the Council of Chiefs, Community Development Committee (CDC), and all youth groups in the area.
The governor announced the decision on Thursday during the April 2026 Praise Night at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Diri also directed his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Thompson Amule, to immediately constitute an interim committee to manage the community pending the restoration of peace.
The action follows fresh violence in Ogboinbiri that led to the death of a resident identified as Ifolo and the destruction of several properties.
The crisis reportedly stemmed from a dispute involving a former youth leader, Mr. Experience Pere, and allegations of stolen electric poles.Diri noted that the state government had not granted full recognition to the sacked paramount ruler, Chief Okosughe Benson Eseimokumo, due to the community’s recurring instability.
He condemned the repeated clashes, which he partly linked to disputes over benefits from oil companies operating in the area.
"Enough is enough," the governor declared, warning that thuggery and destruction of lives and property would no longer be tolerated.
A dusk-to-dawn curfew had earlier been imposed in the community, with heavy security deployment to restore order.
