Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has pledged to investigate and address allegations of human rights abuses by military personnel following a meeting with Kano-based legal practitioner, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani.
Dantani, who disclosed details of the engagement on his Facebook page on Wednesday, said the meeting was prompted by rising public complaints of unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions without trial, and other violations by armed forces personnel.
The lawyer presented specific cases to the Minister, including the alleged killing of Abdulrahman Mustapha, who was reportedly arrested by soldiers on March 22, 2026, and later shot dead under unclear circumstances.
He also cited the death of a 14-year-old girl in Maiduguri on April 4, 2026, after she was hit by a stray bullet inside her home. While the military attributed the incident to a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member, Dantani claimed there are strong indications of a soldier’s involvement.
Another case raised was that of Abdullahi Garba from Gwoza, Borno State, who has allegedly been held in military custody without formal charges after publicly calling on leaders to tackle insecurity in his community.
In response, the Defence Minister assured that the issues would be thoroughly investigated and necessary reforms introduced to improve military-civilian relations.
He also facilitated contact with senior military officials to expedite resolution of the cases and emphasised that any personnel found guilty of misconduct would be sanctioned.
The Minister, however, urged citizens to respect the law and cooperate with security forces in the discharge of their duties.
