Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has said Islam is suffering reputational damage under the presidency of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
Baba-Ahmed made the remarks on Tuesday at a political event organised by the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, under its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
Addressing what he called a sensitive but necessary issue, he said the discussion required courage. “It’s not easy for me to say this… but it must be said,” he told attendees. “The world of Islam has never suffered reputational damage as under Tinubu, Shettima presidency.”
He argued that in many Muslim-majority countries, governance has historically been linked with peace and justice, citing past leaders as examples. However, he stressed that his comments were not about promoting religion over competence, but about sincerity in leadership.
“This is not about religion,” Baba-Ahmed said. “If you are presenting religion, then present genuine candidates who will govern by the dictates of their faith. If you are bringing a Christian, we want a genuine Christian. If you are bringing a Muslim, we want a genuine Muslim.”
The former senator said leadership, regardless of faith, should reflect authenticity and accountability.
The remarks come amid ongoing national debate on governance, leadership standards, and political representation in Nigeria.
