Thousands of communities across several Nigerian states have been left stranded and vulnerable after terrorists and bandits destroyed or forced the abandonment of police stations, a PUNCH investigation has revealed.
The attacks have created serious security vacuums in parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Anambra, Kwara, and Imo states, leaving residents with little or no police protection.
Many police facilities have been razed or abandoned due to repeated assaults by armed groups, forcing officers to withdraw from the affected areas.
With conventional policing crippled in these regions, communities now rely heavily on vigilantes and local hunters for security, exposing millions of people to increased risks of kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.
The development highlights the growing challenge of insecurity and the shrinking presence of state authority in parts of the country.
