Civil Society Groups Pressure Tinubu to Sign Federal Audit Service Bill

A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has intensified pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to promptly sign the Federal Audit Service Bill into law, warning that further delay could worsen corruption and weaken public financial management.

The groups, including budget transparency advocates and public finance watchdogs, argue that the bill is critical to overhauling Nigeria’s outdated 1956 Audit Ordinance.

If signed, the legislation would establish a Federal Audit Service and a Federal Audit Board, grant greater independence to the Auditor-General of the Federation, and empower the office to effectively audit public revenues, expenditures, grants, and intervention funds.

The Senate passed the bill in December 2025, completing legislative processes, but it has remained with the President for assent. CSOs note that successive administrations have failed to sign similar reforms, allowing financial leakages and weak accountability to persist.

Advocates emphasise that signing the bill would mark a major step towards fiscal transparency, especially as Nigeria manages a massive national budget.

They have called on the President to act swiftly and constitute the Federal Audit Board within 90 days of assent.

President Tinubu had earlier pledged to sign the bill without delay when it reaches his desk, but stakeholders are now urging him to follow through to strengthen anti-corruption efforts and improve public trust in governance.
