The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended the Auditor-General for Local Governments, Abraham Gberidyer, over allegations of financial misconduct and fraud involving about N4.6 billion.
The suspension was approved during plenary on Thursday following a letter from Governor Hyacinth Alia, transmitted through the Head of Service, detailing serious allegations of financial irregularities against the auditor-general.
In a statement issued by Michael Zape, Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Berger Emberga, the governor noted that Gberidyer is currently under investigation for corruption and cannot continue in office in line with constitutional provisions relating to the removal of corrupt public officers.
Lawmakers unanimously approved the suspension to allow for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the allegations.
The development is part of broader efforts by the state government and assembly to ensure accountability in the management of local government funds.
During the same plenary, the assembly also passed a bill for the creation and adoption of an official Benue State symbol and anthem.
Another bill seeking to repeal the Benue State Sports Marketing and Lotteries Board Law of 2017 and replace it with a new 2024 law passed second reading and was referred to the relevant committee.
Additionally, a bill to adjust the retirement age and improve remuneration for magistrates and legal officers scaled third reading, while the Benue State Pension Harmonisation Bill passed second reading.
