Bende Elders Seek Monarchs’ Intervention in Orji Kalu, Benjamin Kalu Rift

Elders from various communities in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State have appealed to traditional rulers to urgently intervene in the growing political rift between Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

The elders made the call during a visit to Eze Anthony Okorochukwu, the monarch of Bende Ancient Kingdom, on Monday.

Led by former Bende Local Government Chairman, Emmanuel Onwuchekwa, the group described both leaders as their “sons” and expressed concern over the escalating tension between them.

They urged the traditional rulers to advise Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to embrace peace and end the hostility with the Deputy Speaker.

According to the elders, Benjamin Kalu is not opposed to Senator Kalu’s ambition to return to the Senate in 2027, noting that the two politicians are contesting for different positions.

“Ben is not stopping Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from contesting for Senate. They are contesting for two different positions. Why then should there be this level of hostility?” the elders said.

“We don’t want any war between Igbere and Bende. We have had enough of this,” they added.

The rift between the two prominent Abia APC leaders has been brewing over control of the party structure in the state and positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The elders’ intervention seeks to prevent the crisis from degenerating into a larger communal or political conflict in the area.
