ASUU Urges FG to Address Delays in Implementation of 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to urgently tackle the delays and distortions in the implementation of the December 2025 agreement signed between both parties.

The union warned that failure to fully implement the deal could lead to fresh industrial unrest in Nigeria’s public universities. ASUU made the call at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, on May 9 and 10, 2026.

In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU expressed disappointment over what it described as the “distorted and uncoordinated” rollout of the agreement.

The union noted that the positive momentum generated after the unveiling of the agreement on January 14, 2026, is fast fading due to slow implementation by both federal and state governments.

Key concerns raised include the non-inauguration of the Implementation Monitoring Committee, delays in addressing welfare issues such as earned academic allowances, and inconsistencies in how the agreement is being applied across institutions.

ASUU stressed that the pact, which followed years of negotiations, was meant to resolve long-standing issues around university funding, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy.

“The momentum generated with the unveiling of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement is fast waning and may soon be lost if government’s promise to fully implement the agreement is not kept,” the union stated.

ASUU appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, to intervene and ensure full compliance with the agreement to prevent a return to crisis in the university system.

The union said its NEC would reconvene soon to review developments and decide on the next line of action if necessary.

This latest warning comes barely five months after the agreement was signed with fanfare to avert further strikes and stabilise the education sector.
