Army Confirms Slain ISIS Leader Built Fortified Enclave in Borno

The Nigerian Army has revealed that Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the slain second-in-command of ISIS, established a concealed and heavily fortified enclave at Metele in Borno State.

The disclosure comes hours after United States President Donald Trump announced the elimination of the terror leader in a joint Nigerian-US military operation.

Trump described al-Minuki as “the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” saying his death would significantly weaken ISIS operations globally.

He commended the Nigerian government for its partnership in the mission.According to a statement by Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-East (Operation HADIN KAI), the operation began in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026.

“Following confirmed intelligence that Al-Minuki and his international terrorist cell had established a concealed and fortified enclave at Metele in Borno State, the US partners in conjunction with OPHK conducted precision air-ground operations on the confirmed location while Special Forces were deployed to provide security and deny escape routes,” the statement said.

The operation, which ran from approximately 0001 hours to 0400 hours, involved synchronised air and land assets, leaving the terrorists with no escape.

Al-Minuki and his fighters were neutralised with zero casualties or loss of assets on the side of the joint forces.

The success of the mission was attributed to sustained intelligence efforts, including legal intercepts and reconnaissance, which provided full target development.

President Trump had earlier praised the “meticulously planned and very complex” nature of the operation that led to the elimination of the high-profile ISIS commander.
